Replacement earrings!

Ta de Dah!!!  They're done - the replacement earwigs!!!!

Now I know why the originals were my favourites - they take SO much time to make!!  They're very fiddly but I think well worth the effort.  I have another 'variation' on these which I may make in a few days and with different colours.  

The thread I used is Dual Duty plus - Bouton Artisanat.

I did add some more dangly beads to these 'just because'.  Oh, and you can see I didn't try to replicate the original one either!!!!!!

Norman and Aileen

I've just realised that I'd forgotten to let you know the order of the first guesses on the TIAS.  Been a bit busy lately with the Pop-A-Bobbin shuttles and getting them in the mail!!!  

The first correct guess (and I SO admire her for 'getting it' so quickly) was Caroline who after day 4 was 'wondering' if it could be a rooster or a hen.  Well done, Caroline.

Katie wrote after day 6 and she said:-

“Hmm, woke up this morning with a brain flash.  It must be a rooster or a turkey, the first bit as the tail and the second as the wing and the eye is part of the little pin-head.”

After day 7 Isa guessed right too and said:-

"Here it's my TIAS day 7. And I know what it is................... A Beautiful ROOSTER......."

Also on day 7 Ginny asked if it was a chicken and Lai Ellen said:-

"Day 7 done!  Suddenly dwell on me it might be a rooster, but the tail part looks a bit too sweeping down, so my guess is a peacock."

There were a few more guesses on that day and after day 8 I think many more guessed too.  I tended to 'lose the plot' after day seven!!!!  That's because I've got a brain as big as a chicken!!!!

Tuesday

Another rooster strolled in this evening after a long walk.

This one is from Betty in THE NETHERLANDS.  This is what Betty has to say:-

I've been working on a dove pattern for my little sister for the past few weeks.  I've got about 9 of the wretched things lying around the house in the 'that's NOT any good' stage (note to self - find and bin them TODAY).


She made the Pam Palmer one which I think is lovely but dear Sally wanted one without any 'stops and starts'.  She knows that I try to avoid 'cuts and ties' at any price so she left the 'hint' in the aged brain that she really, really would like another dove pattern to work in 'one hit'.  


So, out came brain cell number 3 who (I must add) must've been in a winter's hibernation mode!!!!  Thus the many, many tryouts.  I tried to use Picasso's dove sketch (which I love) as my source 'inspiration' but it wasn't right for this project.

Finally I 'got there' (thanks Jennifer, Bev and Sally for your suggestions) and you can see it at the bottom of this post.

Why have I called her Delilah?  You'll have to read this to find out!!!

Monday evening

Late this evening I received this rooster from Roelien in THE NETHERLANDS.  This is what she says:-

"I am Roelien Moesker from the Netherlands. I live in the northern part of the Netherlands, Groningen. After 45 years I started tatting  again in april last year. I became a member of the frivolitékring in our country. I tried to make the tias. It was rather difficult for me, but with help of my friend Ankie I finished it. I hope you like  my rooster.

I like tatting."

Pop-A-Bobbin shuttles

The new shuttles arrived at 'chez Jane's' yesterday so after a quick lunch I spent a long time in the afternoon listing them.  Very lucky to get them listed as I could happily have kept 'the lot'!!!   

They really look superb. 


This post (the above part) was going out to announce the fact that the six shuttles were in the shop - BUT by the time this morning came they'd all gone.  If you want to see them but missed out then please take a peek in the 'sold' section of the shop.


Neither Sally or her DH ('im locked in the garage) seriously expected this fast response so now I'm going to say that if you want one of the next batch then let me know and I'll keep a list.  You'll need Paypal but I think this way it'll be a faster service for those who 'missed out' last time.  When the next ones arrive I'll email you and let you know and we'll 'go from there'.  I'm not sure what wood Nick ('im in the garage) will be using for the next lot but I do know he's ordered some more specialised woods so the prices may vary.

Thanks for all the hilarious suggestions on what to do about the earring problem - I'm still thinking about it!!!!

Is my name Van Gogh?

I ask this because I have a problem.  

Houston, listen to me - I have a problem!!!!

On Saturday I lost one of  my favourite of all time earrings while I was out shopping.  

Now, do I 

(a) cut off the one ear and if so, which one 

or 

(b) do I make another one exactly the same to match the remaining one 

or 

(c) do I make a new pair which will be similar - but not the same.

All these decisions to make!!  Not fair to put all these problems in the path of an old git!!!!

Beads

On Thursday we went shopping.  

On the way from one town to another we stopped at a bead outlet.  Nothing like the ones you get in America - NO WAY.  This was a place out in the country and the shop itself is in a barn.   Well, it's got doors and windows but it's small.  There again - do you need a huge place for small beads (and buttons)!!!!

I'll show you what I bought.  There's a string of what look like Swarovski beads which are SO pretty.  Then there are the funny tag things which I designated as 'useful'!!!!!  Then there are the beads.  I know you can  hardly see them but believe me they are drop dead gorgeous.  And they're square.  I don't think I've ever seen square beads before.  I got a tub of these blackish ones and one of an opaque white.  Really pleased with both sorts.

Saturday

First (and I hope not the last!!) in today is from Liz in AUSTRALIA who says:-

"Hi Jane.  I finished the Rooster and whilst it’s not as flash as the other ones, I’m still quite pleased with it."

Next fluttering into the coup is from Sonja in THE NETHERLANDS who says:-

Whooops a daisy!!!!

If I didn't have friends like Riet I think I'd be wandering this earth like a 'lost soul'!!!  

She reminded me that I'd got another Palmetto pattern which I'd forgotten to put on the site!!!  

Now when you see it (IF you can find it!!) you'll see why.

This is a pattern for a very, very small snail.  One that you could use to put on cards etc.  I actually 'planted' them in people's salads at the Palmetto banquet so there's another idea too.  Anyway, he's up on the site now and I've put him under 'doodles'!!!!

A new technique page.

I could kick myself.  OK, a lot of you out there could probably kick me too.  YIKES, I'd have a sore backside if you all did that!!!!


I forgot to mention yesterday that there's another page on the site which is well worth looking at.  No, I'll change that last sentence.  I didn't mention it on purpose yesterday because I didn't want you to miss it!  


A couple of weeks ago Patty Dowden popped into my inbox with yet another idea for making the SSSR.  

I've tried it and it works a treat.

So, with Patty's permission I've added her page to the site.

The patterns I taught at Palmetto are now up on my site!  I've had permission from the girls in SC to put them up BUT I can thoroughly recommend that you still buy the CD with ALL the teacher's patterns on.  It's exceptionally good value for money with some stunning patterns on.  If you go here and look you can see what each teacher taught and then you'll understand what I'm talking about.  

I thought it was about time to get them up as I see that they are now calling for teachers for this year.  

I also made up a couple more birds to list in my Etsy store.  They're the 'blue birds of happiness'.  I'd never heard of them before but Georgia suggested it.    From what I can find out it's from the thrush family and she sent me this picture.


Thank you to everybody who commented on my post of yesterday.  I feel fine about not getting the claps at blood donor or the certificate.  Thank you all in tat land - without you guys life would be very tedious.

A sad story!

I've just remembered that it's a week ago since I had a sad day.  

I'd spent a long time preparing and tatting bookmarks for that day.  They were for gifts.  

What was the occasion?  My 75th.  NO, not birthday - 75th blood donation.  For years and years the same nurses have been in the church hall where it 'happens' and they always love the wee butterflies (the 5 ring SCMR ones) I give them on each visit.  One year (think it might've been my 50th donation) I gave them tatted hearts.  

So this was a big occasion, my 75th, and I'd decided it would be my last time so thus a decent gift was needed and made.  That was the reason I designed these butterflies.

So, off I trotted to the donation centre - a brisk ten minute walk away.  Shortly after my arrival and bang on my appointment time I was called for my 'interview' and soon after we'd sat down the lady suddenly beetled off (she'd spotted the number 74 at the top of my sheet).  Back she came with disappointment number one.

"We haven't got any certificates with us today so you'll have to wait til next time."  You get a badge when you've given 10, 25, 50 and 75 donations and also a certificate at 75.  I was SO sad and I explained that this was to be my last visit so she said she'd arrange for one to be sent to me in the post.

Then we went onto the finger prick test.  I failed - disappointment number 2!!!!  The blood wouldn't sink in the test jar.  So, onto a phial full to put in the machine.  I waited, waited, waited and eventually even the machine rejected me.  .25 down.  A measly .25 down.  It's been a LOT worse than that in the past!!

So I went round and gave away my butterflies and said goodbye to them all (well, I may have to go back next time to get a frigging certificate if it doesn't come in the post).  

I've been at sessions only once where somebody got a 75 award and they got a CLAP from everybody (at least 20 people excluding staff).  I wasn't even offered a cup of tea and a biscuit for mine!!!!  I sulked out of the place  and went for a walk instead.

The third and FINAL insult is that the next day my arm was bruised.  BRUISED after a measly, tiddly, tiny bit of blood taken for their wretched machine!!!!!  The first time I've EVER been bruised in 75 arms full.  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.


Anyway, to conclude this sad story - I sulked about it for almost a whole hour and then turned it into a joke against myself.  Well, what else do you do when life socks you one, eh?  

Introducing Robin the robin!

I'd like to introduce you to Robin the robin!!!!  

Named after a friend of my sister's, whom I have never met (and who's name IS Robin), I wanted to show you this wee chap.

Sally asked me if I could make her a Robin a few weeks ago after she'd posted this one on her blog.  So this is what I came up with.  Not an easy task as there are so many colours in the wee chap.  Brown, black, red and white.  

As you know I'm not a lover of sewing in ends so it was a challenge to get to do this without too many ends.  Still, after re-writing it only once I did manage to avoid a few!!!

I've listed a couple of Robin's robins in my Etsy store.  I know it's a bit stupid at this time of year but I SO wanted to share him!!!!  Here are a couple of pictures of 'the bird'!!!!

Playing around with leaves!!

Last week Sue Anna sent me a lovely gift of some threads and odds and ends.  The threads were some of Yarnplayers.

I've resisted buying the HDT's as I've always thought of them as variagated threads.  I'm not very fond of variagated threads.  That's just ME being an awkward old moo.  I can get on with them if they are gradually changing colours but stark changes frighten me.  I'm not that fond of them as the main 'element' in lots of patterns but DO work with them quite a lot alongside a plain.

Sorry, I'm rambling again - it's what old people do when they get - well, OLD!!!

So, one day I was looking at Yarnplayer's HDT and spotted celery amongst them and thought - hmmm, that looks good, very good.  Imagine my delight when two skeins (1 size 20 and another size 40) were in the bag from Sue Anna. 

I couldn't wait to get my mucky mitts onto using them and eventually I got there!!!

This was the project I'd got in mind and it's just the loveliest thread to work with for these leaves.  The thread 'glows' alongside the beads which sparkle.  Aren't I a lucky old git?

Secret Santa - follow up or IS ERIN PSYCHIC?

I was so surprised when my secret santa showed up but when I opened it and saw one of the items inside my stomach turned before I burst out laughing.

Why did my stomach turn?  I thought that Erin was psychic.  I'm not sure if you can see on the previous post as I didn't want to make it look too obvious.  


This was what was in the package.  A fat quarter covered with Normans and Aileens!!!!!  Now what AM I going to make?!?!?

Mary Konior

Since the death of Mary Konior two weeks ago I've thought a lot about this lady.  I never knew her or anything about her but her books were published at a time when I needed to tat something different.  Most of my books and leaflets up until then had been the old Coats and Penelope ones with just doilies, hanky edgings and antimacassars in.  I think of her with the following memories of how and when I bought the books.

Back in 1985 I bought her first book just after publication.  I can't fathom where I got it from as there's no sticker in it to say.  It cost me the sum of £6.50 though and it has my married name in it so I was 42 when I bought it.  This would have been at a time when I was happily married with teenage daughters and a full time teaching job.   The book is A Pattern Book of Tatting. 

Her next book came out in 1988 and is the one called Tatting in Lace for which I paid £8.50.  Interestingly this hasn't got my signature in it but the following year when the next book came out I have signed it again with my married name.  That book (Tatting Patterns) again cost £8.50.  I can even track the time of year I bought this book as my ex 'went walkies' in November that year with my friend.  So I must've bought it earlier on if I was using his name to sign with!!!  I ditched 'that' surname shortly after he went and returned to my proper name!!!

The final book was published in 1992 and is called Tatting with Visual Patterns.  I must've REALLY valued this lady as I was having a tough time around then financially so to pay out £14.99 on a tatting book was a BIG DEAL.  It must've been an 'egg on toast' week that week!!  It was a real inspiration to carry on tatting.  

Which is my favourite of the four?  ALL of them.  I've enjoyed many hours not only making up the patterns but also just browsing these wonderful books.  

Thank you, Mary for being in my life when I needed you most.  We never met and never will but I feel I know you through your work.
