This is REALLY UGLY tatting and my second and last attempt in the 70's at needle tatting! Well, I have tried it since but I still don't 'get it'!!! Too 'lumpy' for me and also hard on the hands trying to get a decent tension. It never looks as good as the shuttle versions - least when I've done it. I've tried very, very hard and ......... well, given up!!!!
Isn't this the ugliest thing you've ever seen? I wore it once and that was that. Daren't even try to remember when or where I wore it but I know it was over a tshirt or something. Goodness knows why I've still got it after several moves - perhaps as a lesson to myself!!!! It really should be chucked out as I'd never fit into it now and wouldn't wish it on myself or anybody!!!! In fact I suppose I should be ashamed of showing it to you!!! Please don't stop reading my blog - I need you all to keep me going.
I don't know how it looks in 'real life', but in a photo it's rather pretty!! But hey, if needle tatting doesn't suit you, don't do it.

It certainly doesn't look ugly in the photo, but you can never believe photos :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's not ugly, but pictures can be deceiving??? I rather like it! if you have put as much time into needle tatting as you have shuttle tatting you tension does improve. IMHO ;)
ReplyDeleteI think this is lovely, you clearly gave up on needle tatting too soon. ;) I would totally make and wear this shirt if I had the pattern. Did you crochet the neck and waist? After I "master" this shuttle thing I think I might have to tackle crochet next...

ReplyDeleteWow, that is a lot of work no matter how you did it. I don't think it looks all that bad in the picture as the larger threads/small yarns can be needle tatted without looking as loose as the smaller threads do. and Maureen is right, many would wear it today. Your skill with knitting & crochet shows too.

ReplyDeleteI think it looks good but, if you don't like it, you could cut it just under the sleeves and use the bottom part to make a chic hat by gathering it and adding a pom pom lol

Of course tatting with yarn will never have the delicate look of dainty lace. Needle tatting has improved since the 1970 era. Have you ever tried a garment of clothing using the shuttle?
ReplyDeleteYes, Gloria, I did and around that time too, if I remember rightly. I used sewing thread and made this http://janeeborall.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/got-me-thinking.html I agree needle tatting has improved as I've tried the modern way too. Still has that 'puffy' look, though!!!
Deletejust use a tatsy shuttle to work it and you'll get the right tension and no puffiness. but WOW I always wonder what a tatted sweater would look like and it's cool
