An apology

I apologise to all who were upset by my blog post the other day.. I thought someone had done a similar design after they had seen mine, but I was mistaken. They had 'got there' by their own means.

I would like to point out that I was in no way accusing anybody of copyright theft, please take time to re-read my original post.

I guess I was excited to see a pattern I recognised. The whole situation got very personal and out of hand which has been immensely hurtful to all parties and this is not good for the tatting community.

Over the weekend I seriously considered taking down my site as it would appear that the only valuable designs are those that are paid for and that free ones are under valued. I decided not to as it’s something that I enjoy doing.

I will not be publishing another design based on my original but will (in time) add a technique page showing how I added the beads to the centre of the one I did.

  1. Leaving aside the question of copyright, I must say that I'm immensely grateful to all the designers who make their pasterns available at no charge. I have no problem with people charging, but I'm not in a position to pay on line. My crafting world would be very narrow without the wealth of on line patterns and information.

We appreciate your contributions to Tat Land, Jane. Both of you are great designers and crafters - you both have my admirations!

  3. Jane, I am glad you reconsidered. Your site is one of the ones that I refer beginners to when they want to know how to do something. Yes I do pay for patterns when it is one that I want. I have one that I paid 3 or 4 dollars for that the designer now gives away. Do I regret buying it? No. Does it make me appreciate free or paid designs less? No.
I do agree with copyright. I am having thoughts along that line right now with something I created but shall wait and see before I accuse.
Thanks for keeping the site up. It is much appreciated by many.

  4. A gracious apology Jane, and I hope now that the dust will settle and we can all get back to enjoying tatting once more. I certainly don't think your pattern site is undervalued at all! - and am glad you haven't removed it. Amen to the end of the Star Wars!

  5. I'm sure the dust will now settle down for good. Jane, I don't know why you thought you were not appreciated - you are an outstanding icon of the tatting world (should I say tatting cosmos) and have contributed IMMENSELY with your techniques, ideas, patterns, innovations, and not to mention the annual TIAS. You have also been very generous with your time & prompt response when we ask for help. Your 2014 TIAS was what really opened the doors to modern tatting for me - inspiring me to learn new techniques in a fun, participatory, and interactive way.

Knowing you have a great sense of humour, I will take the liberty of saying that you were simply acting like a grumpy old git for a while there.
So Never think of pulling it down - generations of tatters have learnt through you & your free sharing, even if not everybody comes out to visibly thank or appreciate.
    Hugs

Sounds like Newton and Leibniz discovering calculus independently but simultaneously. Great minds, you know!
