Moaning Monday

Yes it's that time of the week again - Moaning Monday!!!!

Today I'm going to moan about - well, not a lot really.  I could grumble about the weather but I won't as I can't do anything about that except accept that I'll be permanently damp for quite a while yet.

I guess the one thing that does bug me at the moment is the never ending succession of  new names for old techniques.  This does bother me as some of the old ones are set in history and for very good reasons.

The latest one that I REFUSE to use is TR (or TOR) for what traditionally used to be called a ring on a chain (RoCh).  This name (RoCh) says it all to me - it's a Ring On a Chain.  A TR (TOR) is, to me, a ring off a ring. or something you've thrown out with the bath water.

Does that sound impossible - a ring off a ring?  Well it isn't and, although the designer who first brought it to us (Sabina Madden) calls it a LTROR I always think of it as a thrown ring.  I'll show you what I mean and you can decide.  Here's the link to Sabina's page.

There are other examples of 'new' names for old techniques too - just can't think of them for now.  Aren't you glad?!?!?!

Need to add a picture so here's one of the new 'inmates' in my Etsy shop.  His name is Freddy!!!

  1. Yes, tatters often come up with a 'new to them' technique and don't realise it already exists and already has a name. Ring on a chain sounds more sensible to me. Freddy is adorable, even though I have a frog phobia!

  2. Judith always tells us that “ there’s nothing new in tatting”!. Speaking of rings on rings though, I recently needed to tat a quick little cross, and I started with your Celtic Cross. But I had to admit defeat, I couldn’t understand how you got two rings on top of each other. I was probably in too much of a rush. I managed the Iona Cross with no trouble, it was perfect for the card it was posted in.

  3. Maureen, do you mean this pattern? http://www.janeeborall.freeservers.com/crossceltic.pdf To get those rings on the rings is simply a self closing mock ring. You must've been in a rush as I know you're more than capable of doing that!!!!

  5. I think I was extremely stressed at the time, regarding the necessity of sending the cross to an old friend, and my brain clearly wasn’t on first gear!

  6. Eeeh. Some people just don't bother to check do they? I know the technique as RoCH.... but there again, I learnt most of my techniques from you or Jennifer W!

BTW, Sir says you got the spelling of Freddy's name wrong.... Phreddeigh is the correct spelling!! LOL.. The duck on the top of a cartoon Knight drawing on some cards Chris has is called that!!! VBG

  7. I taught children to read in primary school for many years and that resulted in me not being able to spell ‘grownup’ words. Please tell Chris that’s my excuse for not spelling Phreddeigh correctly and that I humbly apologise.
