Yawn, yawn, yawn!!

Another chicken wing doily, I'm afraid. I think I've got another one or two 'inside me' waiting to come out!!!

This one is again done in Yarnplayer's thread - size 20. I think this one is Fall Garden with another plain. The plain is probably a Flora one but the label is long gone!!!

I'm sure I've told you this before but I'll say it again as it might be a useful tip for others.

When I make something I always fill up shuttles. When I finish the project rather than make small doodles with the thread remaining or winding it onto a piece of cardboard or a thingy that you wind embroidery thread onto I always wind the thread back onto the ball.

Of course, if there is less than a yard left it's not worth it. Why do I do this? Simply because if I put it on an embroidery thingy then I'd never know which ball it came off!!! By putting it back on the ball I know it's the right colour and shade in the right place. I also put a slip knot on the end that you can see so that I know that the thread I'm about to wind back onto another shuttle for another project in the future isn't going to be a full shuttle's worth.

Does that make sense?  If not then file it under 'silly old woman rambling'.  Which actually is the truth!

That's exactly what I do with the leftover threads too.

Oh, I do the same. Used to wind leftover on card stock. But have, for long now, wound them back on the ball. (I like the slip knot idea ! ) . I have another reason for this, besides the colour. Noticed that the thread twists Much More when I used it from the cardboard ; while the leftover on ball behaves itself.

I like to wind my shuttles pretty full every time - so winding leftover thread back on the ball doesn't work for me. I have instead a BIG jar in one of the kitchen cupboards which is very nearly full, after all these years, of little plastic bread clips wound with my leftovers. Very pretty they look too, and I do,occasionally use them - just use the clip as a shuttle to tat flowers or butterflies.

Hmmm.... Stop making those coasters!!! VBG... I only make 'doodles' with a yard or less of thread!! Hate throwing more than a few inches away!!! LOL As for the ramblings of a 'S O W' (your words, I only used the first letters!!)... what can one say??? Rofl!!

I should do that. I usually just leave the thread on the shuttle and then wonder what color it is!

Very pretty pattern, Jane. However your opening remarks sound remarkably lewd... : ))

I think this is because you start from the wrong end when you wind back onto a shuttle, so the s or z twist of the thread is backwards! You'd have to unwind from the cardboard and then wind to a shuttle to avoid this, I think I've got that right!

Lewd, Fox? Didn't think it was until I read it again!! I wonder at the way your mind works!!!

I've never ever let anything like that bother me, Fox. Never noticed or worried about which way things twist or not twist!!!! I've never been a perfectionist!!

Very pretty!!! :)

I wind it onto the ball if there is a lot left, but if there is about half a shuttle I'll make a small bookmark.

Lewd? I have never heard that word. To me you sound broody.

I only recently came to understand about the S & Z twists. (Mary Corbett just did a great post about it) . Haven't tried to do anything with that knowledge, except to peer at the pics on her post & go 'Aha!' ;-P

But it is a good tip to have under one's belt & I hope to remember it next time.

Thanks, Fox :-)

Can I get more information on Mary Corbets blog. I would like to read about the S and Z twist. I am a spinner and am wondering how it applies to tatting.

Here is the link to the post I mentioned about S & Z twists on Mary Corbet’s blog : http://www.needlenthread.com/2011/01/s-twisted-vs-z-twisted-embroidery-threads.html
You will find more on this topic : http://www.needlenthread.com/index.php?s=s+and+Z+twist

It is a great site !

Well in 58 years of tatting I've never let things like that bother me!!! I doubt it ever will either!!!

I do agree, Jane :-)
Last evening I wound up some leftover thread from the card stock & just couldn't bother myself with the twist (would've needed a magnifier in any case!).
Further, to Fox's suggestion, the twist will not make a difference whether I wind on card or ball .... coz either way I wasn't checking. It might have something to do with the sharper edges of the card ??!!
Either way, it is always nice to read up on new terms and concepts & keep abreast. I enjoy it for its own sake (how much I retain and remember & recall is quite another matter, though) :-)
