Round 1

Well I succumbed. It could be about half a century since I did a big doily - they don't appeal to me normally but this one does!!! No idea why but that's the weird thing about my brain!!!

It's the Jan Stawatz Monster Doily. I bought the pattern from Zarina's Etsy shop here (she's got more copies I noticed yesterday) and am currently writing down the 'Jane' translation as I go along.

You will notice that I'm not using my usual 'in your face' colours as I'm trying to do something I've been meaning to do for many years - grow old gracefully and use 'old lady' colours. OK, I can hear you all laughing your socks off. I'll probably give up on that idea within a week or two - we'll see!!!

I'm working this alongside Pigmini too so we can check our 'interpretation' of Jan's wonderful pattern. It's not easy but it's working - so far!!!

I love those tiny beads in the middle. Enjoy!

It's a pattern which looks stunning in one colour - very elegant. I have it too, if these wall-to-wall grandchildren slow down a bit, maybe I will allow myself the time to do it as well.

It is a beauty! I'm kind of stuck on rounds 10 and 11, but I'll be fine with it once school's out and I can count properly again. I love that you've put a touch of beads in the center. I wish I'd thought of that!

Welcome to the Monster Doily Club. Nice touch with the beads. There is a clarification sheet available that has some corrections to the pattern (ie, some rounds do not have stitch counts), Let me know if you would like me to send you a copy.

Forgot to mention that if you're a member of Craftree you can find all the errata in the Description field of this page: http://www.craftree.com/patterns/1006
Various members of InTatters/Craftree discovered the errata as they were tatting the doily, and I collated them and uploaded them to the entry in the pattern database.

Thanks, Grace. Found and saved in my working file!!! I never think of Craftree unless I'm given a direct link as I can't find my way round it!!!! Great help.

WHAT?? OLD LADY COLOURS? Phooey - or worse... I love beiges, ecrus, linens and whites and do NOT consider myself one of the blue haired set though I am sometimes informed often by my offspring that Im getting “up there!” Phooey.

I am happy you are doing this one. It is a nice challenge and Jan’s patterns are very beautiful. I think you will enjoy it - if it doesn’t send you hollering and diving head first into the Thames!

This looks like substantial thread - you are going to have a LARGE finished item... : ))

Well compared to my usual riotous colours of choice this is old lady ish, Fox! I'm using a size 20 Aida thread.

Welcome to the Monster Club! You're off to a very lovely start, and I agree that there is no such thing as "Old Lady Colors!".
I did mine in size 20 also and if I remember correctly it came out at around 30" across.

At first I thought, Jane why use beads (I used beads when I first start tatting but now just cannot remember how I did it - shows how much tatting is being done).

But reading Diane's comment, yeah. Why don't we add a bit of 'sparkle' just in the center.

Ok - will put that in the note when I do start my own.

Love you all girls for sharing your thoughts on the pattern.

I was thinking that Jane has lost it. They are lovely colors but Jane is much more colorful than these plain colors.

When I do mine, I will most likely go for one color throughout. Still weighing between Rose and Khaki.

I LOVE the timeless 'Old lady' colors - especially on the big, beautiful 'monster' doilies! It's gonna be gorgeous :)
