A century apart (or more!)

A couple of days ago I saw this on a blog and it reminded me of the neck purse I'd made over thirty years ago!!!  They are so different yet both have have the same purpose in life, although I guess the value of the coins they are meant to hold has changed beyond measure too!!!

Goodness knows where mine is now but it's lurking somewhere in this house!!!!

I'd seen the pattern in the Mrs Beeton's Book of Needlework (I finally inherited an original gold edged pages copy from my gran which was published in 1869 or thereabouts) and wanted so desperately to make it.  From her 'odds and bobs' around the house I was given the clasp.  I wonder if she ever had it in mind to make it?

You can now find this pattern here - number 42.   I had to jiggle it a bit to make it fit the clasp and I also added beads a little differently from what I can remember!!!  As you do!!!

I lined the whole thing with a tiny piece of black silk fabric.  I intend one day to re-visit this clasp again (when I find it!!!) and replace the tatting.  Meantime I have a yen to make neck purses again and will (hopefully!!!) be re-visiting this pattern shortly to see if I can improve on it!!!!

After considerable thought and still being intrigued with this pattern I have now decided to try it again!!!!  I'm going to 'translate' the pattern into 'Jane' and will share it if it ever gets done!!!!

It's very elegant isn't it! - and my granddaughters and at leat one daughter would love it!
"Jane" is almost the universal language of tatting these days, I shall await the translation eagerly.

I love tatting from Beeton's book. That reminds me, I have the square motif that I reinterpreted for Georgia that I've never sent. Couldn't decided which of the two methods looked better. Love the little purse!

What a sweet little coin purse. How is the material attached to the purse? I like the look of all the beads on the purse. Very Nice!!

This is really beautiful, Jane.
I think you can find some purse frames in the UK here http://www.u-handbag.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14
or on Etsy

Oh, thank you 'queen of internet searches' (aka Crazy Mom Tats). I like the idea of the first one where the fabric is hidden between two plates. I'm not going to take the old one off now as I'll keep it (IF I find it!!) as an heirloom. Now you've really got me inspired to do this again - properly!!!!!

Oh, that's just lovely. The black and white and all those beads would make it a pretty pendant as well as a useful item.

Ah, anonymous, are we talking about my purse? I've yet to find it!!! I think I know where it is but it's not easy to 'get at' at the moment!!!! I have got thread and beads out ready to start another, though!!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!! I'm glad I saw Agasunset's blog post - jiggled the old brain into remembering!!!

OMG, what an amazing coincident! Agasunset just showed her tatted coin purse few days ago http://www.agasunset.com/2010/10/coin-purse-portmonetka.html and it just happened that you remembered about yours from 30 years ago. Interesting that you found it after it was showed elsewhere, don't you think?

Not a coincidence, Ata. It's the way life is - we all bounce off each other's ideas. I haven't found my original yet!!!! I found the picture on my computer but have yet to delve into my suitcase to find the original item!!! I put a link to Agasunset's purse as it's interesting to show how things develop and change over the years. Sadly it's got me interested in interpreting Mrs Beeton's original pattern again - not easy!!! Watch my blog for more developments!!!
