These things are sent to try us

I'm SOOOO fed up with BT.  They're our isp and they suddenly sent this message which you can read below.  This means that EACH and EVERY one of my files has to be changed on my web space.

A few years ago I decided to buy space on freeservers for the excess files which wouldn't fit on the BT free space but I kept the main home page with BT.   Now I've got to change every darn link in every file.

Fortunately I did upload the entire site to freeservers when I first bought in so at least I can find stuff there - with a bit of 'research'.  Now every image, home page link, other links and all the footers have to be changed too.  I'm also cross as it does appear that they'll give us very little final notice so I need to get it done quickly so I can find the links on BT easily to 'match' to freeservers.

Soon you'll see a message on the BT front page saying that I'm moving but I want to get more done before I do that.  I've done the animal section (that's taken almost three days) and I'm going to go down the site in a logical order except that I've not done the Tips and Techniques section as there aren't any images to link to - I'll leave that until last!!!

So, please if you're interested do bookmark this page as my new home page while I slowly and painfully work my through.  At a guess there are roughly 300 files that need 'attention' and I can get probably 8 done in an hour!!!  If you find links that are wrong in the animal section then please let me know.  I'll update you on progress.

How infuriating! Very cavalier treatment. I'm sure sorting all that out is not how you wanted to spend your time, especially as you have recently been doing 'housekeeping' on your site. Good luck. We wouldn't like to lose your pattern pages because of BT.

That sounds like an overwhelming task to me! If there's any way I can help... an encouraging word now and then? Good luck!

Jane, I am so sorry that they did this to you. I know what a pain it is when they shut down servers. If there is anyway I could help you, I would. Will be waiting for your updated pages.

Jane I don't know what's going on with BT, they are a real pain in the a..., But my email address is bt though yahoo and I keep getting a message to say I have to login to yahoo and if I don't they will close my account, I spoke to Bt a few weeks ago about an email that looked odd and they said it was spam, I keep taking no notice of yahoo just hope it's not real although if it was my account would have been closed by now. These spammers and real emails are very confusing at times.
Hope you can get your files moved in time.

Gosh, I've had at least 100 of those types of emails, Margaret. I took no notice at all - realised they were spam straight away. We've had no problems with BT but the amount I pay for the freeserver account is a lot cheaper than they're offering and I'd have most likely have had to change everything too. Sod's law.

Thanks, Diane - that's a very kind offer. Had another few hours on it today and am now in the 'motifs' section!!!!

I was shocked to read this! I wouldn't be able to deal with this kind of thing. I'm upset just reading about it! It's very unsettling to realize how vulnerable we are to the 'powers that be' on the internet. I admire your ability to even know what to do, although it will involve a lot of tedious work. I would have no idea where to begin. I'm sure I would be in tears. And, of course, this causes a big 'ripple' in our tatting community. I am really sad that you have to go through this!

Oh, Jane, that does suck. I will be cheering you on too. I love your pattern site!

Oh, Kathy and everybody else - this won't interrupt things as I'm doing it in such a way (I hope) that service will continue!!! It's a long, tedious job but I'm doing it in a (hopefully) logical way!!! I'm through 'animals', 'celebrations' and 'odds and ends' but there's still a long way to go!!!! Just need to make sure it's done before the 'plug is pulled'!!!

Been that, done there! a couple of times. Of course if you had an HTML writer program like Dreamweaver, all you have to do is create one new link and it asks if you want all the other associated links updated. POOF! in one fell swoop all links of that kind are updated. No manually entering in the links. But that is beside the point of horror updating the code. You may need more than a glass or two a day after going through this! Stay well!!

Me too - this is my third time of moving everything. First it was globalnet, then btinternet and now freeservers!! IF I had Dreamweaver I'd be a rich woman!!!! It was actually good to have to do it as I picked up on lots of other little odds and ends which needed changing too. Well you've got to also consider - what would an OG do if she wasn't doing that? MISCHIEF!!!

I wouldnt know where to start

Jane, I'll share my dreamweaver with you. I thought about putting my family research through bt, but then decided nope, these things have a habit of disappearing over night. So went the way of paying a friend to host on his server in London. As to Mischief, well you're not that far way from me, I'm here in glos so we can get up to mischief together.!!

Thanks, Tricia but I think brain cell 3 is done with learning new skills!!!! To take on something like Dreamweaver would just about kill him off!!!! I pay freeservers now and hope that will stay put for a few years!!!!

Oh Jane,
How horrible that you've had to go through all this work to preserve things as you like. Blogger is good...at least, for the time being.

I'm about to complain to google though. More and more I find that posts and blogs from friends who use their web sites and blogger have all kinds of words/phrases that light up like you should click on them, but it's all spam. Maybe it's just me and my computer. I'm not computer savvy.
