YouTube. Yes, that’s the subject for today’s moan!!
I love YouTube in so many ways (I managed to fix the dishwasher a couple of years ago by watching a tutorial) but there are some videos that I find truly a ‘waste of space’.
Yesterday I found I was watching one which showed a ‘free tatting pattern’ being made.
This was a generic pattern that’s been around for years so it’s not ‘new’ as such. But it was the quality of the video that was so poor and misleading. No soundtrack (please NEVER play background music) and text on the screen which wasn’t that useful either. There was no explanation of the starting method either.
Ah well, back off my soapbox and on with the day!

So many patterns are in video format now, I haven’t the patience for them! It takes too long doesn’t it? Thankfully there are many patterns in pdf form.
The ones that get ne are the ones that haven't been edited and drivel on - oh gosh, I've dropped my needle, I'll have to find it before I carry on, blah, blah, blah. Still, there are good quality videos out there that can be very useful.
Agree with you, Maureen about the blathering on ones!
Jane McLellan - you’re right about those too (not edited ones) and I just don’t stop long enough to see if they get any better!! I’ve seen good quality videos too where the person sharing it has given totally wrong information and when offered advice did another video to correct it but left the original up. I think their hearts are in the right place but most of those doing pattern videos appear to be newcomers to tatted lace and don’t have the experience. I do use the technique ones from time to time to remind myself of how something is done.
I'm afraid I'm more of a 'printed page' person. I rely mostly on your techniques page(s) to learn/remind myself how to do new or 'rusty'/ forgotten things. So easily available, so easy to put things into video and post them online now, so anybody can do pretty much anything online in a video. Unfortunately, most people don't have a clue how to be concise or how to edit. I just don't have the patience. I'd rather do without the pattern than sit and watch them tat/crochet/whatever the entire project start to finish. Often they lose me at the beginning, when they are running their fingers repeatedly over the thread(s) to be used....ad infinitum. ;) Don't even get me STARTED about the sound tracks....
I think I'm going to remain totally anonymous this time, sorry. :)
I too am a printed pattern person and use YouTube only for clarification or just amusement.
BUT I just totally LOVE the thatched roof building photo!
Love the pic of Anne Hathaway's home - was there with you 8 years ago
8 years ago? It feels like only last month.
