Two more butterflies

I'm done with the blue t-shirt and will take a photo of it when the butterflies are all sewn on.  Just to bore you to tears!!!

The top one can be found here and I used the version without a button.  Plain and simple - just like me!!!

The bottom one is here and is the one I translated from one of the Dutch books.  Again I used no beads.  

I've used beads on motifs on t-shirts in the past and they've all survived numerous washings but this time I thought I'd 'go plain'.  They don't call me 'plain Jane' for nothing, you know!!!

Butterfly one for blue t-shirt

Here we go with the first of several (IF I'm not distracted!) designs for the new blue t-shirt.  

This is one of my own designs (I try to check on old patterns from time to time) but without the beads and replacing one 'chain' of beads with a split chain.  The pattern is here if you want it.

Another t-shirt

Just a quickie today to show you the 'naked' blue t-shirt.  I do already have ideas for this which I'll show you shortly.

Moaning Monday

Yes it's that time of the week again - Moaning Monday!!!!  

Today I'm going to moan about - well, not a lot really.  I could grumble about the weather but I won't as I can't do anything about that except accept that I'll be permanently damp for quite a while yet.  

I guess the one thing that does bug me at the moment is the never ending succession of  new names for old techniques.  This does bother me as some of the old ones are set in history and for very good reasons.  

The latest one that I REFUSE to use is TR (or TOR) for what traditionally used to be called a ring on a chain (RoCh).  This name (RoCh) says it all to me - it's a Ring On a Chain.  A TR (TOR) is, to me, a ring off a ring. or something you've thrown out with the bath water.

Does that sound impossible - a ring off a ring?  Well it isn't and, although the designer who first brought it to us (Sabina Madden) calls it a LTROR I always think of it as a thrown ring.  I'll show you what I mean and you can decide.  Here's the link to Sabina's page. 

There are other examples of 'new' names for old techniques too - just can't think of them for now.  Aren't you glad?!?!?!

15 today

8th May 2006 is a date not to remember!!!  Least it is for me.  

I was fiddling around with the blog a few days ago and noticed that tomorrow will be my 15th anniversary of when I started nattering to all and sundry somewhere 'out there'.

It still fascinates me that people 'listen/read' my ramblings - I certainly don't!!!!!!

This is the first post I ever made and I'm still wondering why I'm here but I still keep talking to myself (it IS a sign of insanity I'm sure!).  

Beige t-shirt finished

I've finished the t-shirt from Mary's design called 'Fan and Ribbon'.  This is from her book 'A Pattern Book of Tatting' but I 'invented' a feature motif to go at the centre front.  

I didn't join it to the others because I couldn't decide on joining places that would look right to me!  I will NOT be sharing this motif as it's far too close to the original which is still, obviously, under copyright.  It does take a bit of working out how to do it and it did stretch BC3's poor old brain cells but it was well worth the effort.  

As you can see from the motif I did use vsp's to give me some joining places while sewing it down - as I did on the main edging.

I'm really, really pleased with this t-shirt and will be moving onto the next one  shortly!!!

The poncho on another model

I had a visit from my daughter and most of the family on Saturday and I persuaded Abbi to try on the poncho for me.  

I wanted to see if it was a case of 'one size fits all' and was pleasantly surprised to see how good it looks on her.  She looks gorgeous anyway and it was very reassuring to see that it fitted so well.  She's about the same height as me now!!!

Squirrel shopping!

Well not quite 'shopping' in the regular meaning of 'going shopping' but this time I'm talking again about my Etsy shop.

As I've said before I was lost after the poncho was finished and decided to set up shop again in Etsy.  This has been a huge success not only in sales but it's made my poor old BC3 focus on little things that need another looking over on my pattern site.  

It's amazing that something you've designed even a short while ago will be improved by the slight tweaking of the design.   These rabbits are one of those patterns.

Although I was pleased with them when I uploaded the pattern, I wasn't quite so pleased when I came back to look at them last weekend.  The problem is that when you're designing something as tiny as this even one double in the wrong place can throw the whole thing 'out'.  This then means yet another re-tat.  I think I spent two days just tweaking these two.  Yes, there are two - one a bit bigger than the other and both different.  I'm a glutton for punishment!!!!

As you know I picked this edging (details are on this page too) for my t-shirt edging.  

But I didn't like all the picots as they're a pain on trimmings for clothes etc.  Well that's what I think!!!  Here's part of it on the t-shirt for you to see.  

When Mary started publishing her patterns there was a lack of tatting patterns in a more 'modern' style and the books brought a whole new range of work.  I bought all her books as they came out and that was at a time when I didn't have a lot of spare money.  My books have been well used!!!!

I've been quiet lately as I've been working on the t-shirt trimming which I'll soon be able to show you.  

Meanwhile the Etsy shop is ticking over nicely.  It's just as I want it - occasionally I get a sale which means that I can plough that back into more 'stock'.

I'm very careful with using a facility like this and NEVER list something that isn't made and waiting in my 'shop box'.  Everything listed is already there - even if they sometimes get left under the scanner by mistake for a day and don't make it into the box until they're re-found!!!

This little hummingbird design is so cute but the wings are a bit 'fiddly' to make.  Still, keeps the old fingers (and BC3) busy!!!

Something different

Well Spring seems to have finally sort of arrived so it's time for me to start looking at summer clothes.  

I didn't bother last year due to lockdown and seriously didn't bother for the past two winters.  BUT I feel as if life maybe opening up a bit more for now and I have decided I cannot go around looking so scruffy for any longer!!  Scruffy is my favourite look and (I must admit) over the winter I've made it my only 'look'!!!!  

Isn't it amazing how easily you can go through life without wearing a bra when you're in floppy winter clothes and never take a coat off because you're not allowed to go into a building apart from a food shop  or your own house?  No I wasn't going to strip off in any shop but the freedom of not wearing a certain item of underwear is a habit I'm now going to have to break!!!!  What better excuse to go back to wearing one than having a new t-shirt!!!!

BUT as any tatters reading this will know - a person cannot leave an item of clothing without some sort of 'decoration'!!!!  Now, what colours, what size and what pattern shall I use to decorate this new t-shirt?

A story behind each critter

There's usually a reason for me designing a new animal.  Sometimes I've been asked or somebody's suggested it or sometimes it's because I've been talking to somebody in the country where the animal lives.  Sometimes it's just because I want to do that particular creature.

So when it comes to stocking the shop I've started giving the animals names - when I can think of one!!!

The penguins became 'perky penguins' because that's just because they looked like that!!!  Nelly became Nelly just because she's an elephant!!!  

The two today have reasons for their names.  Barney because Barney sort of goes with Barn owl but Hootie has a very personal reason for being called that.  He's an adaptation of one of my older patterns but with bigger wings.  

He has that name because of Bob and Gloria with whom I've stayed a few times when in South Carolina.  They live in the most glorious spot on the banks of Lake Murray and Bob feeds an owl each evening.  We had the luck to see his 'Hootie' one evening on my last stay with them.  

Still stocking the shop!!!

At the moment I'm still stocking the shop - or rather, trying to!!!  I get a few listed and then they get sold so back to the shuttles I go.

I'm trying out new 'lines' all  the time but this is just a hobby and I'm not 'in it' to make a fortune.  Well, a little bit to cover the costs of using Etsy helps!!  

The main problem for me is keeping track of earnings and 'outside' costs as I have to declare this to the government.  Numbers (unless double stitches) are an anathema to me.  My BC3 just doesn't want to play numbers!!!  Never has done and never will.

When it comes to restocking I'm adding back things that appear to be selling like the dolphin (I just LOVE making him) and the octopus.  I try to vary the threads I use each time too - mainly because I forget which ones I used before!!!!

A change is as good as a rest

Well that’s what ‘they’ say!!!  

I decided a few days ago that I’d make some earrings for the shop.  Now, I’m VERY fussy about earrings. Mine have to be bright and cheerful but also be able to be worn indefinitely without them losing their shape.  

If an earring is large and without many beads then it will tend to bend.  HA, HA.  Like that - I’m a poet (tend to bend)!!!  So my remit for myself is to have lots of beads to stop the jewellery bending.

These are my favourite earrings.  I’ve got them in all sorts of colours and some I’ve made bigger by making the chains longer.  The whole piece is made on a button which you can barely see as I add beads on top of it.  The pattern is on my freeservers site and can be found here.    It’s fiddly but so worth it.  Well here is the first pair in my Etsy shop.  

I’m working another pair (or two) in black with gold beads next.

Another elephant!

OK you must think I've gone hephalump (elephant) crazy by now.  Well I promise you I haven't!!!  

Do you remember this elephant that I made for my friend down the road?  Here it is.

Well I'm a bit fussy about things when I make them and I was NOT happy with the poor elephant.  The yarn was thick and hard and to make it made my arm ache.  The kit came with a size 6 crochet hook which was like wielding a hockey stick!!!  So when I was back 'in the zone' for elephant making I got out a size 3.5 hook and some yarn that I had in my stash.  This one looks 100% better, I think.  When I stuffed it you couldn't see the stuffing through the stitches and I was altogether a lot happier with it.

I didn't tell Sue I was making it so it was a surprise when I gave it to her.  I must say I enjoy amigurumi crochet.  

Magnificent Monday!!!!

There - that foxed you!!!  Bet you thought it was going to be another moaning Monday post!!!  

I'll be honest - it's not any different to any other Monday really.   My Etsy shop seems to be booming at the moment and I'm spending a lot of time re-stocking it as items sell.  I've got one more idea to make and then I may start on another 'line' of items to list.

Nelly

Look who trotted into my shop yesterday!!! 

I called her Nelly because I couldn’t think of a better name for an elephant!!!  

I hope she behaves herself while she stays with me!!!

Look what flew in yesterday!

This is the newest inhabitant to arrive in my shop.  This little design is a new one and one of those frustrating ones too.  

As you probably realise designing anything new is not easy and to make something small and of a size to suit card makers and quilters is even harder.

I had what I thought was a reasonably good stork and then showed it to several friends who said that the neck was too thin and the legs a bit fat!!!!  They were right.  Just when I thought the whole thing was finished it was a case of going back to basics!!  

I really value the input from people when I run things by them.  Without those sort of comments I’d be lost.  Thanks, folks.  

One stork is carrying a boy and the other a girl.  Can you guess which one is which?!?!!?
