Playing with earrings
But there comes a time when an old git like me needs a more exciting pair!!!
The pink pairs below are my first 'real' attempt.
Well, I say 'real' because three or four others 'hit the bin' before these were made!!!
Actually these are the reason I found the new way of adding beads to a ring and a split ring - there's one of each in this pattern so that you can practice if you choose to make this earwig.
The pattern is now on my web site here. I've written it slightly differently so that it reminds you to add the larger beads BEFORE starting the ring or split ring.
I did that for myself really as I kept forgetting!!!!

Good find
Occasionally there are beads. Necklaces and bracelets. I buy these if I like them and then cut them up to use in my tatting. The lanyard was made using bracelets found there.
One day I found a sweet little necklace and my friend said that the beads are actually cornelian stones.
They were quite pretty as they were and I nearly left the necklace to wear as bought. Then I decided to cut it and see what the dear little beads would look like in split rings. I'm very pleased with the results.

Thoughts on addiing beads
2 August 2009
Isn't this strange?
I'm honoured that whoever owns these places thinks my 'not really original' lanyard is worth linking to.
The strangest thing of all is that I've now got hundreds of free original patterns out there but this rather 'silly' simple one that's been done thousands of times before by hundreds of people has been picked out!!!
I guess the reason is that it was put on my blog and not on the pattern pages.
Ain't life strange?

Yet another brooch!!
Now this is a story of a pair of earrings that have morphed several times!!
After wearing these motifs as earrings on a few occasions I decided that they were a bit too heavy and 'bulky' for my liking. Four flowers on each ear? A bit O T T!!!!!
I took them off the hooks and 'linked' them with a safety pin to wear. as a brooch. That's 8 flowers to one brooch!! What a fiddle getting them on and off clothes!!!! So, while I was making up the last brooch I decided I'd 'finish off' this one by adding the 8 flowers to a proper brooch finding.
First, of course, I had to find the darn thing. It'd gone missing!!! While I was searching I also found another small flower that was in my 'box of completed bits' and added that to the 'ensemble'. Now I'll wear it!!! So, here we have a '9 flower' brooch!!!
30 July 2009
Oh, NO!!!!!
I was just about to point out that this couldn't be done with a ring when who should pop out but 'you know who'.
YES you can use this method (sort of and upside down!) to add a bead to a ring too.
I will draw this up later today and let you know tomorrow when it's ready to go. Meanwhile here is the orginal way extremely well shown by Jennifer.
I'm not sure that the new way will be better but it'll be an alternative!!!!
Lanyard with beaded SR's
All I did was work out how many doubles I needed to surround each of the 2 different sized centre beads. I did this by doing a practice run - just to be sure.
Then I added the small beads (alternately) to both threads and started.
The knack, I feel, when doing something like this is to attach each SR to the previous one to avoid twisting. So, this is the way I do it. Well, actually this IS the pattern I used to make the lanyard. I made it in pink. Perhaps you noticed?
R1: 1 vsp 3 - 3 vsp 1 Cl (I left the picot on this first ring so that when I return to the UK I can add a motif to the lanyard thus converting it to a necklace)!!!!
SR2: 1 + (last vsp R1) 5 B 5 vsp 1 / 1 + (1st vsp R1) 5 B 5 vsp 1 Cl
SR3: 1 + (vsp last SR) 3 B 3 vsp 1 / 1 + (vsp last SR) 3 B 3 vsp 1 Cl
SR4: 1 + (vsp last SR) 5 B 5 vsp 1 / 1 + (vsp last SR) 5 B 5 vsp 1 Cl
Continue like this for length required finishing with another ring like ring 1 but joined to previous SR.

I wonder if this is new?
I say it's 'new' but I know from 65 (and a half!) years on this planet that there's nowt new under the sun!!! That's my sister's sun, of course!!!
I've always found that the way I've done them before (by pulling the core thread down and adding the bead) made it fiddly to close the SR - AND didn't give me a totally tidy result.
So I fiddled around the other evening and I think I've found a better way.
So, here's what I do now!!!!!
Things that go on behind the scenes!!!
A few days ago all the teachers were asked for a bio about themselves (one with a few unknown facts about themselves if possible). I said that I was going to look for brain cell # 3 and then I'd be back with the results.
Shortly after Riet thought she spotted the missing cell in her garden!!! He was reported to be looking pale and ill. WHAT was he doing in The Netherlands, I ask myself!!!
Martha Ess then said that if she saw the missing brain cell she was going to keep it!!!!
Erin's solution to her brain cell problem is this -
"I keep my extra brain cells in a bottle of chloroform under the bed. Raymond picks them up at Hobby Lobby for me about twice a year. Unfortunately I go through them rather quickly, and apparently mine are not the same quality as Jane gets over there in England. I hear they have them available in bulk at Walmart, as well."
Then Martha found a brain cell of her own and managed to get it to sit still long enough to be scanned!!! Here it is below!!!!
Meantime Riet is still wondering if they can be grown on trees in the garden - if so she'd like a cutting!!!
I'm wondering if we're all sane enough to be teaching at Palmetto!!!
From earrings to brooch!
Well it's time for a confession!!! I'm always a bit 'ambitious' when designing and I did an extra round on this motif. One too many to make it into an earring!!!! So instead of throwing it into the bin I decided a brooch would be a good idea instead!!!
The flat motif at the top on the brooch finding is one I found in my 'box of bits' and didn't use. For this (and the earrings) I used Dual Duty thread.
I must find more of this thread when I'm in the U.S. of A. It's a joy to work with.
24 July 2009
Last one - I promise
I do have one quite exciting one on it's way but I want to add more to it so it'll not get finished til September/October.
The other is barely started but it's buzzing well with brain cell # 3.
During this period I'm test tatting some of my older patterns and 'modernising' them. Thanks to the 'wayback machine' I've managed to track this pattern down to it's approximate birth in 2002.
I've also updated the pattern on my site too - see link in the side bar to my home page. It's called 'Celtic Motif 1'. I unpacked the new thread from my suitcase to make this one. Sadly the scanner doesn't do this thread justice. It really, really sparkles.
23 July 2009
Silver and Gold again
You really need to see this thread to appreciate the way it sparkles!!
22 July 2009
3D earrings
This time I thought I'd try something different and here's the result.
Couldn't decide which photo to use so I'm putting both here!! The pattern is really easy and one day I'll get round to putting it on my pattern site. IF anybody wants the 'text only' pattern then do shout.
There are three rounds (after a SCMR) on the upper motif and two rounds on the lower one. The rest is just playing with beads.
Which reminds me - there are only 25 beads added to the shuttle threads. The rest are 'added as you go'. Makes for a fast earring. Of course you may want to make them with just the one motif too!!!!
Ah, before I go!! My sister pointed out to me that there was an enormous boo boo on yesterday's motif. Thanks, Sally, I hadn't noticed. I'll just use that one to show people the thread - it will never go to a new home!!!
21 July 2009
Another motif
Here is a small motif worked with them.
This pattern for this motif can be found here. I may find a bangle to put it in as it sparkles so much in the sunlight. That's IF the U.K. ever sees the sun again!!!!

A true story about a naughty lady!!!
First of all you'll need to know her name but I'm going to get you to guess until the end of this post!!!
This lass sent me three spools of thread about two weeks ago. I've so far tried the one out (that's the bronze metallic I've been waxing lyrical about) and as you've already guessed - I LOVE IT. So, I ordered more.
Now as this lass lives in the UK I rang her up to ask for more thread (silver and gold). First of all I had the usual 'silly' conversation with her DH first!!! I then spoke to her and said that I intended to take the bronze spool with me to Palmetto Tat Days in September so that anybody and everybody there could take some and try it out for themselves.
The spools I ordered duly arrived on Saturday morning. The reason I call her a 'naughty lady' is that she'd put yet ANOTHER spool in for me to take to Palmetto as well!!! So, if you want to test tat this thread then stop me and take some at the Palmetto Tat Days.
The lady's name? Bet you've guessed by now but here's the link!!!
19 July 2009
Thanks for the help
I want to say thanks for all the ideas and comments on yesterday's blog.
LadyDoc - many thanks to you. As a result I did get out brain cell # 3 and found my login and password for site meter and reinstated it on my pattern pages.
To be perfectly honest I was very chuffed when I first put it on years ago but when it stopped working some months ago (thanks, Gina for pointing out that it might have been an upgrade or something that caused it to stop working) I just didn't bother to look into the 'whys and wherefores'!!!!
My weekly reports kept coming in saying nobody had visited the site!!! Heck, I didn't believe that!!
Oh, news on my janeeborall.com url!!! It's not a sex site anymore!!! It's now giving links to tatting and other lace related pages. This is still NOTHING to do with me!!! The plot thickens!!!
18 July 2009
Talking to myself!!!
Yesterday I was 'forced' to dust off brain cell # 3 again as Tatting Chic posted about her giveaway. This is to celebrate her 50,000 visitor.
Now I'm somewhat curious to know how you find out how many have visited a blog. On my dashboard it says I've made 769 posts. I'm sure I've made more than that as the blog has been around since the dinosaurs. Sorry, I exagerate - since May 2006.
Now by my reckoning that's more than three years. I try to post most days but the maths doesn't add up to me.
Then in my profile it says there have been 3,400 views. So, what does that mean and where to I find the visit count?!?!?!?
Ah, I put a counter on the blog not long ago and I get a report from that each week but I still am mildly curious to know how people find out how many have visited. It's not important but I'd love to know!!!

More news on Lyn's new thread and another motif
Lyn told me yesterday that they now have the thread listed here.
I was straight onto the phone to order more. I'm getting the gold and silver.
SO funny as I wrote and told Bev (BJ) that the thread was listed now and she ordered enough to tat another runner!!!!
That was a joke and a BIG hint to Bev to show us the finished runner. I'm sure she mentioned it was done ages ago!!! Well, a few weeks ago!!!
Me? I spent last evening playing with a new earring idea. Sort of based on others I've done but 3D and VERY beady and hopefully VERY dangly. I think this will be a 'multi choice' pattern and easy too. Oh, heck, I know what I'm talking about which is a small advantage!!!
They'll be dangly, long, short, or whatever the person wants/needs!!! Well, that's the plan anyway. Now, when my gold and silver threads arrive I'll be making them out of that too. Whoooppppeeeee!!
16 July 2009
New thread again!!!
I thought I'd try a size comparison as somebody had asked whether it was the same as a number 20!! Well you can see below that it's not!!!
The lavender heart on the left is a number 20 and fits snuggly into a 2 3/4" ring.
I thought I'd try making one in a number 40 thread next - that's the pink/white one!!! This fits into a ring which is just under' 2 1/2".
Finally back to the bronze new thread. Much to my astonishment it turned out to be exactly the same as the number 40.
Eureka - there's the answer!!! It's smaller than a number 20!
15 July 2009
Jigsaw resolved!!!
Here is the finished fairy. Now one may ask 'what is the point'? Good question!!! I've been wanting to do this pattern again for the past year or so.
I wanted to see what she'd look like when when worked in a number 20 thread as opposed to a number 80 which was the original thread used. I actually think I prefer it in the number 20 but it needed some sorting for bead size in the centre of the head and body.
Eventually I bought a bracelet from Claire's and cut it up to use the beads. Then I had to READ CAREFULLY my own instructions on the pattern so I could adjust the ring/chain count to make the head/body fit the bead. Actually it wasn't hard at all and the rest just remained the same. No other problems!!! Oh, I did have trouble with the wings but that was purely and simply me being a plonker and not reading the pattern properly!!!!
Originally I finished this design after a three year 'gestation' period to enter in the Lace Guild competition. The competition was really only my target to get the pattern finished!!!
Imagine my utter surprise when I won the tatting section and a lovely cut glass rose bowl. Where was I when I heard the news? In the basement of a house outside Cincinnati!!! I think it was my first or second year of going to Palmetto tat days. I was SO excited.
14 July 2009
Whoops!!!!!
Reason? VERY long and complicated!!!
A young lad I taught many years ago set this up for me two years or so ago. It pointed to the globalnet site but then I changed it to point at the btinternet site instead.
Fine. All was well.
Then I realised two months ago that the subscription would soon run out and that Andy had disappeared off the face of the planet. Well, this part of the planet anyway. I tried and tried to get in touch with him via emails and his dad who said he was 'on a Pacific island somewhere'. Well eventually I bumped into him in town on a brief visit home to see his mum and dad and he said he'd sort it.
A few emails later and with help from A.N.Other I thought we were 'nearly there'.
Wrong, so wrong!!! So, if you've bookmarked this url please change it to this one for now and I'll see if I can get the other back and under MY control this time.
I need more web space so this is what I'm trying to achieve too.
My apologies to anybody who has been upset but you ought to know by now that I'm not in the least interested in this type of recreational activity!!! Tatting suits me fine - quite energetic enough!!!
13 July 2009
Bits of a????
Over to you!!!
It's pretty obvious, I think. I did a bit more in the evening and stiffened certain parts. All I'm hoping I have to do is assemble it all today - time and inclination permitting.
The hawthorne tree is all bagged and ready for re-cycling on Friday. Whoooppppeeee.
11 July 2009
A busy but not much tatting day in tat land
Don't you just hate those days when you start a horrid but relatively simple job and it escalates?
There I was trimming the tree in the garden which I hate doing (I have to use long handled pruners and it makes my neck ache). I had made a great start when Nick came along and said 'why don't you chop the tree down'? The sparrows love the hawthorne but they've deserted us and haven't visited now for about two years. The tree is dead in the centre, never flowers and takes the sun off part of the garden.
So, out came the saws and five hours later the tree was down and mostly in the re-cycling bin!!! We had to borrow another bin from a neighbour and there's still another few hours clipping to do.
So, that's where yesterday went. Wonder what today holds?
10 July 2009
New thread
It is a new line from Lyn Morton at Tatting and Design.
It's called Nakis Simi and the colour is Bakir. There are other colours too. A goldy one, red (well more of a maroon), green, blue and silver. I've only got small samples of the other colours but I'm going to HAVE to order the silver and gold today.
It tats (shuttle, of course!) brilliantly but gives the look of wire tatting and feels a bit 'wire ish'. If you look at the picots they all 'stand up' beautifully. I never use a picot gauge so these are all 'eyeballed'.
I love it. Gotta make more stuff with it now!!!

The last bracelet?
I hadn't got a pink one and I was told a bit of a secret that led me to believe that it might be useful to have a pink one for later this year!!!
Could be something to do with somewhere I'm teaching in September!!!!
6 July 2009
Another day, another heart!
I'm going to make more of these as they fit well into a ring too!!! I'll show you them tomorrow.
Ummmmm, when I've found them again and scanned them.
5 July 2009
A change of heart
No, don't worry - nothing very much. I've spent some time this past week changinig this page and making alterations to the working of the pattern.
I hope it's now easier to understand!! It is now a 'one hit wonder' with a better tatted centre.
4 July 2009
There I was!
It could've been to do with several (probably 50 or more) narrow boats which were moored on the river bank. Normally there are about half a dozen plus the chain ferry and that's all.
It turned out that there's a boat gathering in the town this weekend.
Anyway there were tents and shows and music going on and as I wandered along I saw a tent full of people tying knots!!! They were members of the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
Well you can imagine. Me? Knots? I was there in a blink of an eye!! This is what I made!
During our natter I asked if anybody knew Lily Qualls Morales (USA and a famous knot tyer and tatter) and several people had met her too. WHAT a small world!!!
3 July 2009
More shuttles
Look - there's an owl there too? Aren't they lovely when they're all sitting together?
Can you see the moon over the top of the owl's head? I think they're gorgeous.
Thanks for showing them, Liz.
2 July 2009
Bobbie's new page AND
I'm also pleased to tell you that she's kindly given tat land the pattern for the little wrist bag with the baubles - which can be found here.
Might be worth checking out my site again as I keep adding things and forgetting to tell people!! Not sure if I mentioned the new guest designer - Judith Smith.
1 July 2009
Further studies of the SSSR
I'm still fascinated by the different effects that the SSSR can give in my older patterns!! Little things please little minds!!!
When I first did the dolphin I realised that it could only be done in one colour unless you made the centre SR's in one colour (2 shuttles for first few SR's) and then took one of those shuttles out and added in another.
This is the result using just 3 SSSR's.
As the song/saying says 'what a difference a SSSR makes'. No, that's not quite right - should be 'what a difference a day makes'!!!!
30 June 2009
I never enter these - BUT
This is the giveaway on this blog!!!
I am honoured
She did find a way (which was extremely clever) but then decided (she was right) that it was too unstable to use.
Jeanne came along with the answer which is stonking clever. Matthew has approved the idea and now between us we've got together and are putting together a web page.
This is taking time as we're all on different planets. DUH, I mean time zones!!! I hope we get ourselves sorted within the next few days. Long live tat land and all the talent in it.
Whilst doing the drawings in the daytime I've been playing with the idea in the evenings. Remember this bell pattern of mine? Well, look what happens when you use the SSSR (not joined as you work - just the simple variety) in this previously plain bell shape.
In fact you can put in the new red thread during the working of SSSR3. I'll probably not put this alteration on the internet as few people will want it but I will have the pattern on my system should anybody be brave enough to try it!!! Just write in and ask!!!
29 June 2009
I know, I know, I know!!
This means that I have to be ready with threads, beads etc long before we leave as I never know what last minute 'happenings' might happen back here at home.
I like to get shuttles wound and beads loaded and some of the patterns worked up to the place where students might get 'stuck'!!! This means brinigng out brain cell # 3 for a jolly good airing.
28 June 2009
Another bracelet
The thread is black - Flora black! The beads are golds, browns, purply/greeny/black ones too.
I made this a week or so ago for my neighbour - it was her birthday. I am the replacement babysitter for her boys when her mum can't do it. Love those kids to bits.
27 June 2009
Seahorse shuttle
Carol Lawecki and Rosemarie both told me about it's provenance here.
Shortly after that Mimi Dillman (the Queen of the Clunies) wrote to say she'd got the seahorse in the set and had - well, this is what she said:-
"I have what I think is a Sebalace Seahorse shuttle that I won in a raffle sometime I can't remember when or where (an early Shuttlebirds workshop most likely). I've never used it nor have I pulled it out much other than to look at it and wonder who really should have it. Is it you, an ace Seahorse designer and tatter?"
So we did a trade!!! Mimi wanted a bag for her tatting and I offered to give the seahorse a good home too. Look what else came in the parcel - I'm officially a tatter now.
Thanks, Mimi - I'm VERY happy with our trade. I wonder if there is anybody in tat land who has the fish to complete the set? Wouldn't it be great to have all three together?
25 June 2009
Tea for one
It's from Martha Ess's latest book 'Tea is for Tatting'.
When I first got the book I told Martha that this was one of the patterns I wanted to tat and she said that the teapot would be boring.
She was so WRONG. It's definitely and categorically NOT boring. It's actually very interesting. All the elements in the set are easy to follow and a pleasure to work. The only 'alteration' I made in the pattern was to use as size 20 rather than 10 thread.
Wonderful, wonderful little pattern. Thanks, Martha.
24 June 2009
Another new book from ............
Yes, the Houtz brothers have 'done it again' and with the promise of more to come too!!!
Their new book has arrived in the UK at Tatting and Design. I know you can order from their own web site here but I'm pleased to say that Lyn has it now in the UK.
Of course, I had to have a copy, didn't I? There's only really one word for this book. Inspiring.
If you ever think of giving up tatting then go and look through this book and you'll be getting out the shuttles darn quick. Although it's in black and white only this actually makes it more inspiring as the 'greys' make the imagination run riot. I've just found this page on their website which will give you an idea of some of the things which can be done but there's SO much more in the book.
Thank you, Gary and Randy - an old git in the UK is happy again!
These are only my 'experiments' with the threads and shuttles available in tat corner. Neither to be taken 'seriously'!!!!!
23 June 2009
What a difference a SSSR makes
All I did was use this technique (running the second colour through the SSSR) to achieve a totally 'new' look to this old pattern of mine!!! I only did that with one SR too. Just a little longer to work but what a stunning idea.
If tattingchic hadn't put me onto this idea then I'd never been able to work out how to do this heart in one pass.
22 June 2009
The reversible motif
Finally the amended version is done and floating around in cyberspace!!!
I also managed to squeeze in Judith Smith's celtic cross and edging. If you go to my site and look under 'guest designers' you'll find them there!!!!
It's very odd because I thought I'd run out of space (see yesterday's post) but I've now been able to add the two new patterns without any problem at all. Maybe the host was having a 'bad day'. I'll still try to get my 'name site' back eventually.
So that's two things now scrubbed off my list of 'things to do'!!!!

Split ring bracelets
Today's blog offering is from Juliet Herring. She's happily sharing her pattern for these little bracelets.
Split-Ring Tatted Bracelet by Juliet Herring
Materials: 2 Tatting Shuttles, (I use Turkish No. 50, about a British 30), Hook type jewellery fastening, 2 spacer beads (about 2.5mm 3.0mm diameter), 1 focal bead (8mm/10mm diameter), a small pair of pliers to open and close the small attaching loop on the hook.
I use a Turkish No. 50 thread. I measure out a good 6 arms lengths of thread (about 4.5 to 5 meters). You may find you need less, depending on your own wrist size and I would rather have a bit too much thread that run out and have to join in. Using this thread will make a bracelet about 15.5cm long. Thicker thread will make a much longer bracelet, or you could just use less stitches in each ring (using a no. 20 thread you need to use at least 2/4 stitches less per ring). A bit of trial and error is need here.
Start by winding your thread so that half is on each shuttle (keeping the thread as one length).
Ring No. 1 Make a normal ring of 10 double stitches. You will later attach you jewellery fastening to this.
The next stage uses split rings and both shuttles.
Rings 2, 3 & 4. Split rings of 20 double stictches—10 double stitches made using the main shuttle, flip the ring around and work the 10 ‘false’ double stitches using the second shuttle.
Rings 3 and 4 as Ring 2.
Rings 5 & 6. Split rings of 24 double stitches—12 double stitches using the main shuttle, flip the ring around and work the 12 ‘false’ double stitches using the second shuttle.
Rings 7 & 8 Split rings of 28 double stitches—14 normal and 14 false.
Rings 9 & 10. Split rings of 32 double stitches—16 normal and 16 false.
Unwind both shuttles and thread on your beads—one spacer, one focal, one spacer. You can use a needle threader or bead loader for this (a bead loader is just a long-looped need threader. I make my own using ‘Beadalon’ 0.12” nylon coated stainless steel bead string wirebead jewellery wire. I cut a 15cm length, cold it in half and hold the ends together using a couple of French crimp beads, or tie them. I add a bead or two to make it easier to find when I drop it on the floor). Rewind your shuttles.
Rings 11 & 12. Split rings of 32 double stitches—16 normal and 16 false.
Rings 13 & 14. Split rings of 28 double stitches—14 normal and 14 false.
Rings 15 & 16. Split rings of 24 double stitches—12 normal and 12 false.
Rings 17 & 18. Split rings of 20 double stitches—10 normal and 10 false.
Ring 19—The last ring will be worked as a normal ring of 18 double stitches. Begin by cutting off the second shuttle, leaving yourself about 10cms of thread. Darn this end in to the first 9 double stitches. You do this by making each half of your stitch as normal, cross the thread and before tightening the stitch, pull the end from the second shuttle through the stitch to lie parallel with the ring thread. To work the second half of your ring, take a thinner thread (I use at 30cm length of British no 40) folded in half and darn this in to the next 8 and half double stitches (the fold loop first so that it ends up at the closing point of the ring. Finish the second half of your last stitch and close the ring. Cut the thread from the shuttle, again leaving yourself a working length of about 15 cm. Pass this through ring number 18 (for extra security I pass only a loop of it through 18 and pass the end through that to create a simple knot). Pass the end through the loop on the thread you worked into the last ring and then gently pull the free ends of this thinner thread, pulling the end back through the stitches of the ring.
Trim off the ends, attach your hook fastening to the ring 1 by opening the small ring on the hook and then reclosing it. Your bracelet is now finished, and no ends.
Notes.
Remember that when you are working your ‘false’ double stitches you must do the second half of the stitch first, then the first half to complete the stitch (and don’t cross the thread as your ring won’t close). This way, when the ring is closed, the stitches all look the same.
When choosing focal beads, remember that heavy metal beads will drag the bracelet. I prefer to use glass beads such as are used for lace spangling, or flatter glass beads, rather than round ones. I also use Thai Hill Tribe silver beads (the flatish round ones that have a raised thread channel) - these are really light and look great.
You can adjust the number of rings in your bracelet to suit your own wrist size, but don't make extra rings any larger than 32 double sticthes, they just don't look right!
Happy Tatting
